    Biomedical Use Cases

The Biomedical Research Institute of Málaga has extensive expertise in international projects and is highly interested in participating and contributing with case studies in medical areas where communication and raising awareness are key to advancing in these fields. Specifically, we are focusing on the following areas:

    • Mental Health: We continue to fight the stigma surrounding mental health, where individuals still face challenges in seeking help. Our institute has several research groups dedicated to this issue. https://ibima.eu/en/project/c-03/

    • Addiction Research: Research on both substance addictions (legal and illegal) and behavioral addictions (such as video games, gambling, etc.) requires strong, fast, and interoperable communication. We have one of the leading research groups in Europe on this matter: https://ibima.eu/en/project/c-06/

    • Primary Health: Primary care clinicians are the first line of clinical service delivery. They are key promoters of prevention strategies and encounter a wide variety of patients. Our research group focuses on treatment adherence, which is a critical issue that needs to be addressed through effective communication.

    • Rare Diseases: Often overlooked, rare diseases need enhanced communication to promote funding for research and increase societal awareness. At our institute, we have a transversal area dedicated to rare diseases.

    • Cancer: Promoting early diagnosis and providing psychological support for certain cancers and their families.

Contact this email if you are interested in any of these case studies (or others in the biomedical area) for your proposal.

IBIMA is a multidisciplinary research space focused on biomedicine and nanomedicine, based at the Regional and Virgen de la Victoria University Hospitals in Malaga. It also collaborates with Primary Care, the University of Malaga’s biotechnological groups, and the Andalusian Centre for Nanomedicine and Biotechnology (BIONAND). Its goal is to promote excellence in research, with a preference for translational research that leads to results applicable to clinical practice, biotechnology, and broader applications.

IBIMA facilitates the development of a multidisciplinary research environment in biomedicine and nanomedicine, contributing to the scientific foundations of programs and policies within the National Health System. It primarily focuses on translational research across biomolecular, clinical, epidemiological, and technological fields, aiming to transfer scientific advances into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of prevalent health issues at the regional, national, and international levels.

The institute integrates over 80 research groups from the University of Malaga and the Public Health System, encompassing a wide range of research areas, including:

    • Cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes: Environmental determinants and lifestyle
    • Oncology and Hematology
    • Neurosciences, Chronicity, Aging, and Health in Vulnerable Populations
    • Autoimmune, infectious, inflammatory, and allergic diseases
    • Nanodiagnostics
    • Nanosystems and Advanced Therapies
    • IBIMA Rare: Rare diseases (Transversal area)
    • IBIMA Tech: Health Technology and Innovation (Transversal area)
