Secure and Privacy-preserving NWDAF (Network Data Analytics Function)Arleon is a research and development company established for valorizing the academic research outcomes of its founders in the broad field of information, communication and cybersecurity.
Network data analytics function (NWDAF) is a 5G network functionality that has recently been standardized in 3GPP Release 15-17. NWDAF facilitates data collection from other network functions in the control plane (CP) of the network. Privacy-sensitive user information can be gathered by the NWDAF. If the NWDAF or the analytics services supported by the NWDAF are not designed to protect users' privacy, it may not be possible to satisfy the security and privacy requirements of a private or public 6G network. Some analytics services that employ user-sensitive information, such as the location of users or the data generation rate of users, were defined in 3GPP Release 16, however not the related privacy requirements, which are currently being taken care of in the ongoing work (WI FS_SEC_5GMSG, Study on security aspects of the 5GMSG Service) of 3GPP Release 17. ARLEON aims at developing privacy-preserving data analytics in the control plane as an NWDAF service. To enhance accuracy, CP-based analytics may leverage user plane (UP) data as well. In the UP of the forthcoming 6G system, data analytics without affecting data transmission speed and performance can be made possible by the concept of Programmable Data Planes (PDP). When networks are examined in terms of data (user), control and management planes, packet switching takes place in the data plane; routing is in the control plane; and the management of this system is in the management plane. With the concept of PDP, the data plane has become dynamically interchangeable with programs to be loaded from the control plane. ARLEON aims at developing application-specific data analytics systems at line speed that can be developed in a distributed and collaborative manner.
