Expression of Interest
Univ. Politècnica de CatalunyaWe have shown through many published works that wake-up radio is an energy-efficient solution to reduce the idle listening (standby) energy consumption of wireless communication devices. The conventional solutions such as duty-cycling reduce, yet, do not eliminate the energy waste. Moreover, they incur additional sleeping delay that can reach up to an hour in mobile IoT solutions.
A communication paradigm that would reduce the energy waste caused by the idle listening and that would achieve low latency is Wake-up Radio (WuR), where a very low-power secondary radio is used to wake up a sleeping device. In this way, wireless devices can remain in deep-sleep mode and turn off the main radio, unless woken up by remote triggering through WuR. Quantitative evaluations, e.g., [1], show that WuR is a more energy-efficient alternative to duty cycling. That is the reason that under IEEE 802.11, a recent Task Group (TGba) is currently developing a new standard to incorporate WuR to IEEE 802.11 [2]. The industrial interest is apparent from the active involvement of companies in TGba such as Intel, Qualcomm, Ericsson, and Samsung.

We propose to bring our WuR solutions to any type of wireless networks, including the innovative solution of mobile network WuR for LTE or 5G.
We'd like to highlight our experience on various IoT communication solutions, including LoRa, SigFox, IEEE 802.11, NB-IoT, IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee. Interested parties are welcome to visit our publications on the webpage of Assoc. Prof. Ilker Demirkol.
