Abstract
The Learning and Machine Perception (LAMP) team at the Computer Vision Center conducts fundamental research and technology transfer in the field of machine learning for semantic understanding of visual data. The group works with a wide variety of visual data sources: from multispectral, medical imagery and consumer camera images, to live webcam streams and video data. The returning objective is the design of efficient and accurate algorithms for the automatic extraction of semantic information from visual media using deep learning techniques.
Expertise needed / Role in project
The group performs fundamental research into efficient learning from visual data, including information-theoretic approaches, convolutional neural networks, semi-supervised learning, topic models, and Markov models. An increased research effort is focused on deep convolutional networks. The main application areas of the group are in object recognition, (semantic) image segmentation, image retrieval, multi-modal data understanding, color imaging, video surveillance, and human-computer interaction.

Societatea de Inginerie Sisteme (SIS S.A.) is a system integrator operating in the field of industrial automation for oil and gas, renewable energy, water management systems, facility management systems. SIS has experience in process operation and control, industrial operator training procedures, process modelling and identification, and man machine interfaces. SIS SA was involved in more than 30 research projects covering various fields from advanced process control systems and process control algorithms, HAZOP Systems (Operational Hazard), Wireless Sensor Networks, critical infrastructures, biomedical devices, remote monitoring, e-learning, support and process intervention. SIS participated in the FP7 Phaseplit project and was responsible with the supervision of the control system development and the implementation of a remote supervision center. Another important achievement of the research work is PhCenter, a platform for remote diagnosys and intervention for the plant management in hazardous situations. SIS is also involved in the development and implementation of two control systems in Romania, one for drinking water network monitoring and control, and three wastewater facilities.

Abstract
Our contribution to your project will include: matching and integration of 3D structures from different sensors, such as 3D scanners, medical imaging devices, 2D cameras (single, in stereo arrangements, or in a depth-fom-motion situation); registration of images of deformable objects taken in different layouts or postures, or of objects that were partially damaged or fragmented; visual egolocation for imaging systems.

We are looking forward to developing and testing algorithms (in Matlab/Octave, C++ and Python) within our area of expertise, as well as performing field experiments. We like to cooperate with non-IT specialists from various application areas, which we have always found broadening and stimulating.

We are a team with a long experience in the area of image processing and computer vision. All members of the team have successfully managed research projects or parts of projects, some of them international and interdisciplinary, involving fundamental research and applications such as medicine, cultural heritage and forensic toolmark analysis and crime/accident scene documentation.

We either own or have access to a number of 3D scanners: stationary (short and long range) and handheld, as well as a face scanner dedicated for  medical purposes; other equipment in our laboratory includes the 3D printer Dimension Elite, a hyperspectral camera, motion capture devices, and a PIONEER P3-AT mobile platform for 3D exploration. We also analyze aerial photos taken from a drone.

Abstract
Research of our group is concerned with most aspects of service robotics including robot control design, robot programming methods, motion planning (vimeo.com/139385788), robot manipulation (vimeo.com/114881802), autonomous robot navigation (vimeo.com/141078577), computer vision systems and speech recognition systems. In the robot control systems area research is focused on new motion and force/position (youtu.be/8GdswD-st8c) or impedance (vimeo.com/114881804) control algorithms for multi-robot systems. Special emphasis is given to the sensor-based motion planning and control of the single and multiple articulated or mobile robots. In the computer vision and speech analysis area the research is concentrated on visual SLAM, 3-D mapping, 3-D object recognition and tracking (vimeo.com/199649906, vimeo.com/146616698, vimeo.com/139905134, vimeo.com/199697017), and on human-machine communication via gestures and speech. Abstract
We are a young and active team in the area of machine learning in big data applications. Our team is part of the Department of Computer Science which has been one of the leading research sites of machine learning, neural networks and artificial intelligence since the pioneering work of professor Teuvo Kohonen. The team lead Alex Jung is an expert in compressed sensing of network-structured datasets. The team focus is on learning problems arising from big data over networks, i.e., we consider massive datasets with an intrinsic graph (or network) structure. Our team has been working on compressive graph signal processing and and information-theoretic limits for machine learning problems. We are also well networked with companies working in data analytics, sensor networks and Internet of Things.
Expertise needed / Role in project
Our team’s strengths are strong knowledge of the theory, algorithm tools and algorithm development skills. These would be best utilized if we could join our forces with a team with strong understanding of the industrial environment and the problems to be solved there.

I and my associates are researchers and practitioners in the fields of privacy, data protection, AI/ML ethics, IoT, information policy, identity management and sociotechnical systems. I founded an NGO called the Internet of Things Privacy Forum, whose mission is to produce guidance, analysis and best practices to help industry and government to reduce privacy risk and innovate responsibly in the domain of connected devices. I am a member of the UK Cabinet Office Privacy and Consumer Advisory Group, which provides independent analysis and guidance on Government digital initiatives, and a member of the the IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems. I am a Visiting Scholar at the Information School at UC Berkeley, a Visiting Researcher at the Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute, and I have consulted on trust issues for the UK government's identity assurance programme, Verify.gov. I am interested in being the privacy subject matter expert for BDSI workstream projects. I and my associates are able to contribute to issues such as smart city data governance, the role of the citizen in big data, AI/ML transparency and fairness considerations, GDPR, consumer protection, informational self-determination, pseudonymity and identity management, biometrics, and trust mark/certification regimes.
