Research areas

  • Evaluation
  • Speech technologies
  • Written language technologies
  • Image
  • Multimedia

Comment

The LNE's data processing division has managed numerous evaluation campaigns for language technologies. We can help to define common rules in the technologies assessment. On the one hand, we conducted evaluation for machine reading (text and / or images):

  • Named entities detection in written documents by OCR on general domains or on medical domain
  • Search for similar images
  • Topics detection and tracking
  • Citation detection in patents
  • Documents filtering
  • Detection of the document structure
  • Question answering tasks
  • Translation

On the other hand, we worked on campaigns for speech technologies:

  • Detection of speech segments
  • Speech transcription including spontaneous speech and multiple speaker speech
  • Speaker recognition and speaker tracking in audio and in video
  • Named entities detection in speech
  • Translation
  • Language identification

We can conduct common evaluation campaigns (new databases, implementation of metrics) so as to report the progress of your technical solutions. We can also helps to structure the community, organizing meetings (workshops and conferences). In this context, we wish to strengthen our abilities to measure the errors by providing diagnostic protocols.

Linguistic description of data: Granular Linguistic Model of Phenomena, Computing with Words and Perceptions, Fuzzy Finite State Machine

Comment

In many fields, new technologies allow to acquire and store huge amounts of data about phenomena evolution, e.g., evolution of economical phenomena, human physiology and metabolism, behavior of traffic, images of the universe, etc. Nevertheless, this information must be interpreted and represented in a practical way. This includes establishing relationships of input data with available information about the context and history of each specific phenomenon. Currently, this type of descriptions is elaborated by human experts. Nevertheless the rate between the amount of data to analyze and the number of available experts is dramatically getting worst. Therefore, the demand of computational applications able to interpret data and provide relevant linguistic descriptions is quickly increasing. Our research line is focused on the design and development of a new family of computational systems capable of generating linguistic descriptions of complex phenomena, i.e., these computational systems obtain data from a phenomenon and provide linguistic descriptions that are relevant for specific users in specific contexts. This type of systems will be used in supervision and control applications and especially in the development of user interfaces based on the use of natural language. We have demonstrated the availability of our approach with several applications Namely, linguistic description of Financial data, linguistic reporting in training simulators, generation of linguistic advices to improve the efficiency in the consumption of energy, linguistic description of images, and linguistic modeling of human activities.

We believe that we can contribute with a very interesting work package that matches very well with the topic of this Call.

of your institution: Visualisation is one of the strategic research axes of the "Informatics, Systems and Collaboration" (ISC) Department of our Research Center. We aim to cover the whole range of activities from discovering new concepts to developing user-friendly tools. In addition to general knowledge in information visualization, we have some special expertise in:

  • Visualization of hierarchical data
  • Vpace-filling visualization techniques
  • Visual specification of queries

We are also starting research projects about visualizing uncertain data. Conforming to the Visual Analytics paradigm, we are also active in the (pre-)processing of the data to be visualized with a special interest in:

  • (Un)supervised clustering
  • Knowledge discovery
  • Decisional models

Our most mature results are integrated into two software applications called Calluna (for visualization) and Cadral (for decisional models). They demonstrate our ability to manage professional software engineering tasks.

SAIA - Artificial Intelligence

Research areas

Our organization, SAIA – Solution of Artificial Intelligence Applications - is specialized in knowledge discovery in complex data, especially high-throughput biomedical (cancer) data. We are developing Intelligent Clinical Decision Support Systems (i-CDSS) a concept introduced by us) by discovering biomarkers, building the most accurate classifiers for diagnosis, prognosis or treatment response and integrating them in the medical workflow. From time course data, we developed unique algorithms (RODES – Reverse Engineering Ordinary Differential Equations Systems) for automatically inferring mathematical models – ordinary and partial differential equations systems (dynamic systems biology). We developed the most accurate published i-CDSS for various prostate, bladder, and breast cancer and for non-invasive liver fibrosis prediction in chronic hepatitis.
